Willow 'haircut'
News - 4 October 2007
On recent Sundays in September, the Millennium Willow Walk and Dome on Brockwell
Meadows was cut back and restored by volunteers.
The millennium Willow Walk and Dome situated on Brockwell Meadows which has
recently become very overgrown has been extensively trimmed back. This pruning
has removed much of the large and high wood to allow new shoots to sprout. Next
year these new willow shoots will be woven to form a curved roof and sidewalls
to restore the walk to a covered pathway as originally envisaged.
The restoration work was undertaken on two consecutive Sundays last month (23
and 30 of September). The work involved cutting off the overgrowth, removing it
from the immediate area then reducing it into manageable lengths to enable it to
be burned on site. It took two full days to complete. Most of the work was
undertaken by a large group of energetic conservation volunteers coming from
north Essex and South Suffolk who are members of the
British Trust for Conservation Volunteers
(BTCV). The BTCV provided both expertise and equipment. Members of the
Brockwell Group and
Kelvedon Parish Council provided some additional volunteer assistance.
Sadly, despite extensive publicity through numerous leaflets and posters seeking
additional volunteer assistance, no member of the local community in Kelvedon
(other than Brockwell Group members and Parish Councillors) turned up to lend a
hand. This was surprising given that the Meadow is a facility regularly enjoyed
by many people for recreation and the exercise of dogs.
