Help wanted for the biggest stone-pick ever
News - 1 March 2008
This is the invitation that you have been waiting years for!
You are cordially invited to attend the biggest stone-pick ever in Essex on
15 March 2008 from 8.00am at the New Ground, Rye Mill Lane. Be part of it –
this is your chance to become a famous part of Kelvedon and Feering folklore!
Bring your friends and acquaintances – show them a thriving club and give them a
chance to be part of history too.
This is the deal – you have been randomly selected to be part of team A, B, C or
D (we will reveal all when you arrive on the day). Each team has been allocated
one part of the new cricket square. The task is to clear that part of stones –
simple. The team that finishes first will be guests of the cricket club at a
barbecue on the ground. Every person that turns up and stays for more than an
hour will be entered in a draw for £150 of Warsop Stebbing equipment.
The serious side is that we need to clear the ground of stones before we can
start rolling. It is imperative that we achieve as good a clearance as possible.
This is also a good opportunity to ask people in the village to help us with a
little contribution of time, so please ask as many people as possible if they
could come and help. They automatically become part of your team – obviously,
they will help you with your goal of finishing first!
The method: I suggest that everybody brings buckets and you will probably
find it easier to rake up the stones into piles before putting them into buckets
to cart to the side of the field or into the drains next to the square. I
estimate that we could pick the whole field clear in about 300 man-hours. It
does not take a mathematician to work out that with 300-odd members (some odder
than others), this is 1 hour per person.
Please let me know if you are able to come on the day. I need to know what your
core time will be, so that I can work out the best time for photos will be.
Everyone in the photo will be entered for a draw for a bottle of whisky.
So RSVP with the names of your party and guests, and the core time when you will
be there to:
