New parish car park
News - 2 May 2008The Parish Council is proud to announce that work on its new
car park, on land to the rear of the Conservative Club in the High Street, is
now well under way.
The half-acre site originally formed part of the garden of Kelvedon House and
was purchased by the council from Essex County Council for the provision of a
community facility.
The car park, which occupies approximately half the site, is
the most expensive project the Parish Council has ever undertaken and, when
complete in a few weeks time, will have cost a total of £305,000. It will
provide a significant facility for use by residents and visitors, designed to the
highest standards and meeting sustainability and environmental requirements.
With 37 spaces, plus provision for cycles and motor-cycles, the new car park will
serve not only users of the Institute (as well as any new community facility
eventually built on the remaining land), but also those using village shops and
other amenities in the very centre of the village. Access to the car park will
be via a new road, constructed through what was previously the Conservative Club
car park and carefully designed to prevent use by lorries and larger vehicles.
Charges will apply on a pay and display basis, fixed so as to deter extended
commuter use whilst offering relatively short-stay parking at low cost to
residents and visitors. Although ticket charges have yet to be finally agreed, a
ticket machine has been ordered and the entrance (together with the whole area)
will be under 24-hour CCTV surveillance for added security.
