Would you like to contribute to the hunt for veteran trees?
News - 9 May 2008
Braintree Wildlife Advisory Group is working in partnership with the
Woodland Trust to track and
record all large, old trees within Braintree District. The resultant database
will be fed into the Woodland Trust’s national survey.
A veteran tree is defined as:
“a tree which because of its great age, size, or
condition is of exceptional value culturally, in the landscape or for wildlife”.
They can include coppiced or pollarded trees.
At present, there is only limited information about the number of veteran trees
in the district and the parish council tree warden is asking for public help to
identify trees within the parish that might qualify.
A ‘Veteran Tree Hunt’ pamphlet is available from
Braintree District Council (BDC)
offices and a Veteran Trees pack on how to get involved is available from the
BDC Landscape Services Team on 01376 552525. We are advised the pack will also
be available for downloading from the BDC web site in due course.
Further information about the national scheme organised by the Woodland Trust is
available on their Ancient Tree
Hunt web site.
Alternatively, you may wish to advise the clerk of any tree that you consider
might qualify for inclusion.
