Footpath clearance around the former Rivenhall Airfield
News - 21 February 2009
Several parish boundaries meet on or adjacent to the former Rivenhall Airfield.
The original footpath network has been disrupted by gravel extraction work
and some footpaths have been extinguished as a result. Although alternative
paths following new routes have been provided, they have not yet been properly
signposted or legally ‘signed off’ for public use by the Essex County Council (ECC)
Highways Authority. Kelvedon Parish Council has been in the forefront of pushing
for the outstanding remedial work to be completed.
A number of site visits with ECC staff have taken place recently and work agreed. All
required work will be completed during the 2009/10 financial year.
Essex County Council has enlisted the help of volunteers from the
Friends of the
Flitch Way to help complete the work. The Friends – a group originally set up in
2004 specifically to assist the Flitch Way Country Park wardens - have gradually
widened their horizons, firstly to work on footpaths adjacent to the Flitch Way,
and more recently to assist other parishes complete necessary footpath work that
otherwise might not be tackled. Guided and provided with tools by ECC staff, the
Friends provide their labour free for the sake of helping to improve the
countryside.
Kelvedon Parish Council is extremely grateful to the Friends for agreeing to
help with the footpath work necessary in our parish area.
The first tranche of the required work was tackled with a one-day working
party provided by the Friends of the Flitch Way on 17 February. Overgrown and
impassable sections of Kelvedon Footpath 8 and Bradwell Footpaths 55 and 56 were
cleared and rendered useable once more.
Photographs showing
the before and after
pictures can be viewed on the Friends of the Flitch Way web site.
Work to sign and waymark the new alternative paths will be undertaken next.
There is now more of our local footpath network accessible for you to explore
and enjoy.
The definitive map showing all public rights of way in the parish may be viewed
