Awards won for Kelvedon's environmental and recreational activities
News - 17 November 2009
The parish council is pleased to announce that Kelvedon has won several prestigious awards in 2009.
Firstly, Kelvedon was runner-up in Class 2 of the 2009 Calor Essex Village of the Year and Best Kept Village Competition. Class 2 is for parishes with populations of between 2000 and 5000. There are two elements to the competition – a community profile, and an inspection. Judges of the competition are not looking for a traditional chocolate box village, but for a vibrant, enterprising and caring rural community, and the parish council is very pleased that they found it in Kelvedon.
Secondly, the Essex Environment Trust made a Merit Award to the parish council for the new play equipment which was installed on the playing field in 2008. The Environment Trust made a significant financial contribution to the cost of the equipment, and was subsequently so impressed by the project that a further sum of money was awarded. One of the aspects of the project which the Trust most liked was the involvement of young people in planning and choosing the play equipment, and also in fund raising to achieve their goal.
The third award was in the Anglia in Bloom competition. Kelvedon won a Silver Gilt award in the small town category (2501-6000 residents). The competition entry is made by Kelvedon in Bloom, an independent group of volunteers who work very hard to improve the environment of the village by planting up beds and containers such as barrels and baskets, at high profile sites throughout the village. The parish council also plants up and puts out a number of flower tubs in the High Street. Local people help by looking after planters near to their properties. The parish council gives financial and other support to Kelvedon in Bloom, and the group also fundraises successfully from other sources.
Lastly, the council was awarded certificates of merit by the Essex Playing Fields Association in respect of the playing field and the play equipment, certifying that they were maintained to the highest standards to the satisfaction of the Association.
The council is very pleased to have had such a successful year and that the hard work of the council and volunteers has been recognised and rewarded by outside organisations. This is a very creditable reflection on the community of Kelvedon. |
