Best
Kept Village competition 2007
The Parish Council is proud to announce that
Kelvedon has been awarded a Merit in the Best Kept Village of the Year
competition for 2007
In gaining the Merit Award, Kelvedon was judged in Class 2 - for villages with a
population of between two and five thousand residents. Only six merits are
awarded in the county, in addition to the ten 1st and 2nd winners (one of each,
in each of five classes).
The competition is organised by the Rural Community Council of Essex and is
judged by a panel of experienced experts who visit every community that has
entered, quite unannounced and anonymously - the idea is to see the village as
it really is. Marks are awarded out of 10 in each category (with 10+1 being the
highest possible mark - we were awarded this for the Parish Notice board).
Categories include: Litter Control; Waste Bins; Playing Fields; Play Equipment;
Telephone Kiosks; Shops; Village Halls; Schools; and Industrial and Commercial
Areas. So it provides a very thorough look at every entrant and the facilities
they provide.
Although the Parish Council provides most of these amenities, it is conscious
that many residents, groups and organisations very positively assist in
maintaining and improving the facilities and appearance of the village, and for
this, the Council is grateful.
There have been previous other successes. A separate Village of the Year competition runs in
conjunction with the Best Kept Village competition, but is judged not only on
appearance, condition and environmental value, but also on community effort and
village spirit. Kelvedon was named “Essex Village of the Year in 2004”
and went on to become East Anglian Village Winner in the category "Best
Village for the Elderly".
